Android users will get another upgrade as Aereo plans to bring its product to this OS platform. We can expect this to happen somewhere in September, according to the company’s CEO, Chet Kanojia. Aereo represents a TV streaming service that uses really small antennas in order to pick up signals over the air and implement them as data to computers and iPads. This company was on the verge of releasing an Android app last year because it has bigger market share than the biggest competitor, Apple’s iOS.
The exact date wasn’t determined because in his interview, Kanojia said the official announcement will take place in September. This streaming service has expanded quickly in 2012, getting implemented in major cities. It started from several locations like Utah, Atlanta, Boston and New York City spreading the service to many cities in the east side of Denver.
PlayOn, which is an online TV company that offers subscriptions, has announced that it allowed all of their users to watch Aereo data through its service. This looks good but Aereo has announced that there isn’t an ongoing relationship with such company. Another company that claimed usage of Aereo signals is The Barry Diller. It represents a startup that picks up signals over the air with tiny antennas at Aereo’s HQs. Users who are subscribers to Aereo can watch live TV which costs from $8 to $12 a month.
From what we can see this television streaming service is doing really great. In an interview that happened earlier, Kanojia said that they need less than 1 million subscription plans in order to become profitable. This wasn’t the first time he reported something like this. While he was speaking in a startup event which took place in Manhattan, he said that 1 million subscribers to his service will be fabulous, 5 million will be extremely fabulous and when he mentioned ten million subscribers he responded with “Oh my god, what will I do now?”
The legal nature of Aereo does not look great. It was sued by couple of companies which demanded an injunction and licensing fees. None of this happened and companies like News Corp., Walt Disney Co., CBS Corp. and Comcast Corp. have left empty handed.
We can even predict a great success for this service with the expansion to a popular platform like Android. If they keep up this pace, this service will reach more than 10 million subscribers and Kanojia can then ask what to do next because the revenue numbers will be huge. We will bring you a full review of the Android app when it gets officially launched.
Until then you can use the comments section bellow to share few thoughts about this service coming to Android.
